Remembering ThemSomething that should have happened fifty years ago actually took place on Sunday 13th November when a memorial to all those who died while serving with 610 (County of Chester) Squadron was unveiled by our Patron, His Grace The Duke of Westminster. The memorial, consisting of a large monolith of black granite, now stands in Grosvenor Park in Chester overlooking the River Dee – a delightful spot. It was a cold and bright autumn day with sunshine sloping through the trees. The service conducted by The Bishop of Chester was attended by over 150 individuals, including a large group of ex-610 people, their wives and relatives. Precisely at 3 o’clock, just before the service, there was an over-flight by a Spitfire PR. XIX (PS915) from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The aircraft was flown by Squadron Leader Clive Rowley MBE, Officer Commanding the Flight and made several passes ending with a wing waggle salute and climb-out before returning home to RAF Coningsby. |
